CORTONA
AND ITS SURROUNDINGS
WHAT
TO VISIT in the town centre and the surroundings
Villa
Cherubini is located only about ¾ of a mile
from the town centre of Cortona which may be reached on foot
on the old road leading to the Convent
of Le Celle or walking
through the old part of town through the narrow alleyways
of the quarter called "Poggio San Marco". Not far
from the Villa you will be able to find a small bar and a
small grocery store. The Basilica of Santa Margherita is
also very close to the Villa and in the interior you will
be able to see the uncorrupted body of the Saint. Worth seeing
also the fortress of Il Girifalco. Cortona with its narrow
and steep alleys and the prevalence of sandstone in its building
still preserves the almost intact charm of medieval and Renaissance
buildings enclosed by ancient city walls.
So
far as folklore and cultural events are concerned we recommend:
The Feast of the patron Santa Margherita
in February,
the Good Friday procession with statues of the Passion in
the Easter period, The Giostra dell’Archidado (cross-bow
shooting contest) in May, the Antique Fair in august and
September and the tarditional Steak Festival on 14 and 15
August followed by the Porcini Mushroom Festival.

Perugia, Assisi, Arezzo, San Gimignano and Pienza all of
which may be reached in an hour drive.
